How to reduce theft in retail shops

Theft is a persistent issue for retail businesses across the UK, with shrinkage estimated to cost retailers around £8 billion annually, marking it as the highest in Europe. The issue has increased significantly since 2018, with some reports suggesting a 33% rise in retail theft in six years. What can retail businesses do to tackle the issue of theft and shoplifting in their shops?

Invest in advanced surveillance systems

Advanced in-shop surveillance systems, including body worn cameras for your security team and key staff, and smart CCTV, play a key role in deterring and resolving theft. These cameras provide real-time monitoring capabilities and recording of in shop activities, making it easier to detect and respond to suspicious behaviours.

Often, the simple presence of visible cameras can discourage potential thieves from attempting to steal, or make them nervous so that their misdeeds are easier to detect and apprehend. Electronic article surveillance (EAS) systems are also highly effective in preventing theft. These systems use electronic tags attached to merchandise that trigger an alarm if someone attempts to leave the shop without properly deactivating or removing the tag at the checkout. Modern EAS systems sync with your inventory management system to help you keep track of stock levels and identify any shrinkage patterns that may indicate theft.

Train your employees on theft identification and prevention

Many thefts take place under the nose of employees because they don’t know what to look for. Training your employees to be more mindful of the risk of theft and the signs of an attempted crime gives your shop a first line of defence against shoplifting. Regular refresher training on theft prevention and emerging risks can equip your employees with the knowledge to identify and handle suspicious activities professionally and effectively. Your training should include how to recognise common shoplifting behaviours, understanding the importance of proactive communication and customer service in deterring theft, and knowing the appropriate steps to take when they suspect a crime has taken place. Empowering your team with this knowledge will minimise your theft risk and also create a more proactive security culture among your staff.

Optimise your shop layout for better visibility

A well-designed shop layout can improve visibility and reduce opportunities for theft. Shoplifters rely on secluded, quiet areas in order to sneak things into a coat or bag. Therefore, retailers should aim to create as much of an open and unobstructed space as possible to maximise visibility throughout the shop. Positioning high value items like electronics, jewellery, and alcohol in well-lit areas near your checkouts or under direct CCTV supervision can also deter potential thieves. Strategically placing mirrors at the end of aisles, and providing clear sightlines for your employees can also help them monitor customer activities more effectively. By minimising dark or blind spots in your shop, and making sure that all areas are visible, you create a more difficult and less appealing environment for shoplifters.
