Enhancing Communication and Security at Excel London
Excel London, a premier event and exhibition centre in the heart of London’s Docklands, spans over 125,000 square meters and hosts world leading international exhibitions, conferences and sporting events as well as recently opening an immersive events district. Its expansive estate includes hotels, restaurants, shops, residential areas and public spaces. Efficient communication is critical in ensuring smooth operations, safety, and exceptional visitor experiences.
The Challenge
Excel’s two-way radio system was in need of modernisation, with discontinued equipment offering basic functionality and limited capacity. This required external event organisers to bring their own standalone radio systems, which lacked integration with Excel’s Control Room and wider teams. To address these challenges, Excel sought a contemporary, scalable solution that would integrate communications across its entire estate and meet the demands of its diverse events.
The Solution
Following a competitive tender process, Excel partnered with CSE Crosscom to deploy a Motorola Solutions Capacity Plus digital radio system, awarded as a long-term Managed Service contract.
Key system components included:
- 230x Motorola Solutions R7 FKP Premium UHF digital portable radios.
- 6x Motorola Solutions DM4601e UHF desktop base radios.
- 16x Motorola Solutions SLR8000 UHF digital repeaters with combining and distributed antenna system.
- TRBOnet PLUS command-and-control software that provides real-time radio monitoring, voice and data recording, centralised lone-worker monitoring, radio sign-in/sign-out functionality for accountability and more.
- TRBOnet Watch monitoring software.
- Radio Manager for over-the-air programming (OTAP) via Wi-Fi and RF.
- IMPRES Battery Fleet Manager software.
The Managed Service contract ensures proactive 24/7 system monitoring via TRBOnet Watch, remote programming updates, and daily battery health checks using IMPRES Battery Fleet Management software.

The Result
Excel London now benefits from a more reliable and scalable communication system that integrates all departments and external event operations. The centralised system eliminates the need for standalone setups and supports up to 500 additional radios annually, providing seamless coverage across the venue. With proactive system maintenance and monitoring, Excel staff are assured of uninterrupted communication during daily operations and major events.
The Future
CSE recently upgraded Excel’s system to Capacity Plus Multi-Site to support the new Phase 3 venue areas. Excel has also introduced indoor location tracking using hundreds of iBeacons, enabling real-time personnel tracking during emergencies or evacuations. Plans for future enhancements include integrating third-party systems such as fire alarms, access control, CCTV, and body worn video.
With a state-of-the-art communication system in place and a collaborative partnership with CSE Crosscom, Excel London remains at the forefront of operational excellence, setting a benchmark for event and exhibition centres worldwide.
Feedback
“We have worked with CSE for some time now and the level of service and innovation over that period has been phenomenal. At the home of world leading events, our technology and delivery needs to be at the same standard. Dan and the team have delivered this for us whilst ensuring we are operating with a commercial mindset. The team continue to support us to evolve at a strategic level as well as from an on-ground engineer perspective. One of the many projects they have delivered is the rollout of the R7 Motorola radio fleet, which is a great enhancement in capability ensuring that we stay in front of the curve. Excel London believes in preparedness and resilience, CSE share this ethos and do everything they can to safeguard for the best of times and worst of times ensuring that protecting lives is at the heart of everything we do.”
