CSE Crosscom keeps The Streets’ A Grand Don’t Come for Free tour connected
CSE Crosscom provided reliable radio communications for The Streets’ A Grand Don’t Come for Free tour, helping keep the production crew connected throughout the tour.
Over two decades after its original release, The Streets brought A Grand Don’t Come for Free to life on stage for the first time in full. The seminal concept album, which follows Mike Skinner’s relationship with Simone and the devastating loss of £1,000, has become an iconic part of early 2000s British culture.
The production took an ambitious theatre style approach, transforming venues and festival sites into the inner city Birmingham setting of the album, complete with a life size bus shelter inspired by the original album artwork.
With Production and Tour Director Will Driscoll and the wider touring team tasked with bringing the production to life, reliable communication was an important part of keeping the show running smoothly across a range of venues.

Reliable tour radio hire
CSE Crosscom supplied Motorola DP4600e radios, configured specifically to meet the requirements of the production.
Designed for the demands of professional touring, the radios provided clear and reliable communications for the crew, helping teams stay connected throughout performances, changeovers and the wider production operation.
The tour hire radios were supplied in a Peli transport case, providing a robust and practical solution for transporting and deploying the equipment as the production moved between venues.
Communications built for touring
The Streets’ production presented a number of unique touring challenges. The show combined a theatrical performance with a full rock ’n’ roll gig, while its central bus shelter had to be adapted to fit a variety of venues, including tight spaces such as Glasgow’s Barrowland Ballroom and Dublin’s Olympia Theatre.
With the production travelling between different venues and festival sites, communications equipment needed to be dependable, durable and straightforward to deploy.
CSE Crosscom’s Dan Howroyd commented:
“With clear audio, durable construction and proven reliability, the DP4600e radios were ideally suited to the challenges of touring, helping the team maintain effective communications throughout.”
Supporting The Streets behind the scenes
While audiences experienced the theatrical storytelling, live music and distinctive visual world of A Grand Don’t Come for Free, a dedicated production team worked behind the scenes to recreate the album in full.
From the modular bus shelter and evolving lighting design to the extensive playback and audio systems, every department contributed to a production where, as Musical Director and Playback Technician Oliver Twiby described it, “Every detail matters.”
The production was designed to be adaptable and tourable, with the bus shelter able to break down into modular sections for transportation and deployment. This allowed the show to maintain its distinctive visual identity while adapting to different venues and festival environments.
For CSE Crosscom, providing the right communications solution was another important part of the behind the scenes operation.
With Motorola DP4600e radios, bespoke configuration and a robust Peli transport case, CSE Crosscom helped keep The Streets’ touring crew connected throughout the production.
